Celebrating 50 Years of Growing in Hawaii
Bayer employees recently received some wonderful words of congratulations and encouragement from fellow farmers and community leaders at a festive 50thAnniversary celebration of the company’s history in Hawaii.
Held at our Piilani Farm, the celebration featured an amazing décor of butterflies and corn- and sunflower-shaped balloons, along with great food, fun prizes, and a supremely popular selfie display. But the best part may well have been the positive messages and presence of special guests who took time out from their busy schedules to join the festivities.
Community guests included the Honorable Mayor Alan Arakawa; Council Member Yuki Lei Sugimura; State Representative Lynn DeCoite; comedian Augie T.; Warren Watanabe, executive director of the Maui County Farm Bureau; representatives of the Hawaii Crop Improvement Association; and other members of Hawaii’s ag community.
Rep. DeCoite and Council Member Sugimura presented certificates and congratulations on behalf of the Hawaii State Legislature and County of Maui, respectively. As farmers themselves, Rep. DeCoite and Mayor Arakawa shared a few words about the dedication required to be in agriculture:
Mayor Arakawa: “It takes a special kind of person to be a farmer. It takes a lot of skill and a lot of dedication to run a farm operation. There are many other jobs out there that are easier. People talk about farming, but you guys are actually doing it.”
Rep. DeCoite: “It’s not easy to do what all of you have done…without others realizing the significance of all of you and what you bring to the table. It’s a challenge for many of us, having to educate people about how important it is to farm.”
Augie T. rollicked the audience with both heart and humor, and shared his favorite sentiment: “The best exercise for the heart is lifting one another up…and that’s what you guys do every day.”
Thank you to our fabulous employees for your hard work and dedication, and a special mahalo to our fellow community members and leaders for your commitment to agriculture! Together, let’s make the next 50 years even better.
