Kochi captures Monsanto Hawaii’s Outstanding Plant Sciences Exhibit Award

Congratulations to Devynn Leigh Kochi of King Kekaulike High School in Pukalani, Maui, winner of this year’s Monsanto Hawaii Outstanding Plant Sciences Exhibit Award.  Kochi’s project, “Testing the Effects of Legumes in an Aquaponics System,” presented at the Maui Schools Science & Engineering Fair demonstrated how different levels of nitrogen affect the health of an aquaponics system. During this experiment she tested three different aquaponic methods using a flood and drain system, grew and harvested lettuce and alfalfa, and took measurements and made observations.

Monsanto’s judge, John Anderson, was impressed with her project which took over a month to complete.  “Our society relies more on science every day and projects like Devynn’s show how this type of hands-on learning helps our youth gain a better understanding about how the world around them works.”
