Q: Where are GM crops grown in the world?
A: Bringing a new GM trait to market involves extensive safety and environmental review by regulatory bodies around the world. More than 70 government bodies globally review and regulate GMOs. In the United States, agencies including U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) review GMOs.
As of 2013, GMOs are grown, imported and/or used in 70 countries. Each of these countries has its own rigorous certification process.
In 2013, 27 countries were growing biotech crops; others were significant importers. This map shows where in the world GMOs are approved for cultivation, food, feed and trial.
